Uke Hut-Sept 24-

We had our most rewarding night last night at the Uke Hut. An amazing array of ukulele talent! Everyone there foelt very fortunate to have been at the right place at the right time! The night started with a visit from John Anderson, who is transiting New York on a world-wide trip from Australia. He just arrived from Kansas, is in New York for two days, then he is off to Dublin and India! John regaled us with stories of Australia, his travels and great songs. He is always welcome at Uke Hut!
Next Kohli Calhoun returned to Uke Hut for the third time. Each time, her set display her unique and personal style, which supports her compelling song lyrics. It was announced that CMJ has selected Kohli for their annual NY event, so their exclusivity clause caused us to cancel Kohli's October appearance at Uke Hut. She promises to return in November.
We had something of a California party last night, since I just got off a plane from LA at 3:30 yesterday afternoon and Megan MeGeary recently moved to SanFrancisco. Megan was back in New York to record with Jim, her partner-in-crime, seen in the photo below. They have been working on many projects together, such as the Dagmar show, and we got to see and hear this as well as the Amity Rose character that Megan presents, who materializes as as street busker with a repetoire of songs from the Great Depression. We thank Jim and Megan for taking time during their studio session work to share their work with us.
Finally, we had Sweet Soubrette at Uke Hut for the first time. She is an old friend of the Uke Fest, so we know her work well, but the Hut is a much more intimate venue, so you get a different look at this kind of performance. Ellia is about to release a new album (on vinyl, by the way!), so she had several new tunes, which she previewed last night. She brought along a friend, Kirsten, who supplied vocal harmonies, and they brought the house down with insightful lyrics and catchy rhythms.
Lots of fun at the Hut last night.

Three Women And Their Ukes!

Three female giants of the NY local scene are coming to the Uke Hut on the same night, Friday Sept. 24. You can still attend these great shows for free. (donations encouraged!) Kohli Calhoun returns for her third visit and will open this show. Meghan McGeary will appear in several of her stage personae, not least of which will be, Amity Rose! Ellia Bisker, as Sweet Soubrette, is well-known internationally, but maintains her local loyalty and her following is likely to be in evidence. We look forward to a great show. We are also playing host to John Anderson, transiting New York on his way home to Australia. He will do a short set (with an accent!) about 7 PM. Hope you can make it.

Britni Paiva at the Uke Hut

We are very fortunate to have the opportunity to see the premier female ukulele star at the Uke Hut next Tuesday! Britni is an old friend of the New York Uke Fest and loves the city. She has just begun an East coast tour and we found a gap in her schedule, so we could fit an appearance at the Uke Hut. Here is an except from a press release...

At 21 years of age, Brittni Paiva (pie –VAH) is already the preeminent female ukulele player from Hawaii. She's an award-winning multi-instrumentalist whose sound and concept are influenced by jazz, rock, flamenco, and classical music as well as world music from Brazil, Japan, and elsewhere.
Brittni’s new CD, Four Strings: The Fire Within (Talmidim Productions), was co-produced by Charles Michael Brotman, Hawaii’s first Grammy Award recipient. Some of the highlights include guitarist Johannes Linstead’s feature on “Hour of the Lamps”; the timeless and universally popular “Somewhere Over The Rainbow” (lately identified with the late great Israel Kamakawiwo'ole, but the sound is unmistakably Brittni’s); and Carlos Santana’s classic “Europa”. The rest of the album consists of cover tunes and originals that display Brittni’s technique and passion.

Usually, Britni performs in large concert halls. In this case, ticket sales will be limited to 100, so it will be a very cozy and intimate show. Opening for Britni, will be Kohli Calhoun, who wowed the Uke Hut audience last month. Doors will open at 7PM. See you there.

More information will follow about the future schedule.

We are also auctioning a great Kala tenor uke at the Hut-proceeds to go to Sean Bolivar, who is headed to Austin, Texas. Sean was the backbone of Nalu Noa, one of our original groups at the Uke Hut and we will seriously miss them in our next season. Come by and take a chance!

Looking forward to seeing old friends and welcoming new uke lovers to the Hut. Bring all your friends for good food, cheap drinks and great music.

Welcome to Uke Hut!

Come check out the coolest new night club in NYC, the Uke Hut. Think of it as one of the hidden bars, in the downstairs of Maui Taco, 330 5th Ave (between 32nd & 33rd), next door to the Empire State Building, where unpretentious musicians from NY's vibrant ukulele scene perform without a cover charge every Friday and Saturday night (though tipping the band members is encouraged).

Stay tuned for regular listings of performers here every week.

And if you haven't signed up yet, be sure to attend this year's NY Uke Fest, a top stop on the red-hot worldwide ukulele circuit, May 12-16.
